August 2007 meeting

There will be an August 2007 BR407 meeting this month! I'm sorry I am late in updating the page, but I was in Las Vegas for Defcon 15 and just got back on Saturday. We will be meeting this Friday, August 17th, at the usual location in Altamonte Springs mall.

The main topic will be a defcon review. I will bring in the list of talks, the CD of presentations to copy/share, and some freebies to hand out that I picked up along the way.

Some of you who are regulars to the greatest hacking forums that the world has ever known may already know that we finally got our new T-shirts printed up. I will have them with me at the meeting for the first time. You will have a chance to get these before they are available to the public next week. They will also be cheaper! For people who buy the shirts in-person, they will be $15 cash and carry. If you wait and order online, it will be $20 to cover shipping and handling. Buy them at the meeting if you want one!

Please start inviting and publicizing these meetings! We will be discussing some local event ideas and I would love to have some input and support from those of you who may be local. I really need to get some other people also participating and presenting along with me. I put some flyers into the magazines at Barnes and Nobles to see if we could generate some interest. Post some flyers or announcements at your schools or just spread the dates by word of mouth to friends. We want the meeting to grow instead of just being the same people every month, so please help out as much as you can.

We will also have our normal meeting content...

July 2007 meeting
Written by StankDawg

NOTE: The BR407 meeting for this month is being pushed back a day for some special visitors. Enigma from the BR813 Tampa meeting as well as tehbizz and others from the BR561 meeting will be visiting us on Saturday, July 21. We still meet in the food court of Altamonte Springs mall. Look for the laptops and the
logo.

While we have so many representatives of the local Florida groups together, our main topic will be putting together a local conference. We have had ongoing discussions at the BR407 meeting and now it is time to work out some details and see if we can pull it off. If anyone has and contacts or experience with this, please come and share your knowledge.

I will have the final version of my presentation called "When databases attack" which shows how much data is collected by large web sites and how it is easily maintained from the technical standpoint. Everyone is so worried about the government as "Big Brother" but no one seems to realize that big companies like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft are collection more information that any company or government ever should.

This is the last meeting before Defcon the first weekend in August. We will be discussing plans for Defcon 15 BinRev meeting and forums get-together. I will bring some presentations and so will some others, so we have have a miniature conference within the defcon conference.

GEEK ROAD TRIP: We have a road trip coming up one week after our meeting! The BR813 meeting in Tampa (about 1 hour drive) is also pushed back to Saturday (July 28th). A couple of us from the 407 will go and represent O-town. If you are interested in going on a road trip, come to our meeting on the 21st and we will work out a carpool/schedule. Not only that, but I will be making another stop at the KWIK-E-MART along the way. There are 12 locations in the United states where the 7-11 convenience stores have been converted to the kwik-e-mart from the Simpsons. This is only for the month of July as a promotion for the Simpsons movie. If anyone wants to tag along and take some photos, come to the meeting and we can discuss plans.

Please start inviting and publicizing these meetings! This meeting is on a Saturday and would be a good one for first timers since I will have a presentation, we should have a decent sized group and visitors from across the state, and we will have a lot of content.

June 2007 meeting
Written by StankDawg

The BR407 meeting is back on for June after our cancellation of the May meeting. It will take place on Friday the 15th at the normal location (Altamonte Mall, see the FAQ for directions).

I will have a new presentation for this meeting. I do not have a catchy title for it, but for now it is called "The insecure Security Conference" and should be pretty funny as I drop docs on some high ranking executives from some fortune 100 companies and high profile security "experts".

We will be discussing plans for Defcon15 in August and maybe make some group plans while we are in Vegas.

We may also be continuing a little linux "installfest" that we started in March. I have a couple of old laptops (P2 700, 256 RAM, thats about it) that I would like to get wiped out and re-installed with some different linux distros and possibly one with some form of BSD. I do not care which distros we install, but I was thinking of mixing them up. Perhaps one with some flavor of linux and one window manager, and another running a different window manager. We can discuss some of the differences while we do it. If you want to learn some general linux topics or ask questions, this would be a good meeting to attend since I will have some boxen to play with while I am there.

Please start inviting and publicizing these meetings! This one in particular would be a good one for first timers since I will have a presentation, we should have a decent sized group, and we will have a lot of content. I really need to get some other people also participating and presenting along with me. Post some flyers or announcements at your schools or just spread the dates by word of mouth to friends. We want the meeting to grow instead of just being the same people every month, so please help out as much as you can.
